West High had the type of offensive game that teams often have early in the season on Friday night against Cedar Rapids Xavier.
Fortunately for the Women of Troy their defense is already in mid-season form.
West High collected 18 steals and didn’t allow more than 12 points in quarter to overcome some cool shooting for a 44-35 win over Xavier in a Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Division contest in Cedar Rapids.
Seventh-ranked West High shot 37 percent from the floor on Friday and was 1-of-12 from beyond the 3-point arc but limited the Saints to a season-low scoring output while improving to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in MVC play.
Xavier dropped to 2-2 and 1-1 in conference play with the loss.
Logan Cook had a game-high 16 points and Emma Koch and Rachael Saunders each added seven points for West High.
Maddie Huinker led the West High defensive effort with five steals and Cailyn Morgan grabbed four steals in the win.
Kiana Stanek had nine points to lead Xavier.
