Brands Finishes Second at Prestigous Al Dvorak Memorial Invitational

Nelson Brands finished second at the 29th Al Dvorak Memorial Invitational on Friday at Harlem High School in Machesney Park, Illinois.

Brands went 3-1 at the two-day tournament dropping a 5-3 decision in the 152-pound final to Austin O’Connor of Chicago St. Rita in a matchup of nationally ranked wrestlers.

A defending Illinois state champion, O’Connor is ranked fourth nationally at 152 pounds by Intermat while Brands is ranked 19th.

Brands recorded a first-period pin and back-to-back tech. falls to reach the finals and is 25-1 on the season.

Carter Rohweder (22-5) went 4-3 at the two-day event to finish sixth at 160 pounds, falling to Jack Mulay of Mount Carmel in the fifth place match.

West High placed 19th in the team standings with 79.5 points.

Mason, Ohio won the team title with 202.5 points followed by New Lenox with 194.5 points.

West High completed competition at the two-day Battle of Waterloo tournament on Saturday falling to Class 1A top-ranked Lisbon and defeating Cedar Falls and Mason City.

Alex Aguirre, Nelson Brands, Landon Green, Guy Snow and Enutifa Gamia all went unbeaten for West High on Saturday.

Top-Ranked West High Rolls on the Road at Waterloo East

Patrick McCaffery had 19 points to lead Class 4A top-ranked West High to a 76-58 win over Waterloo East on Friday in a Mississippi Valley Conference game in Waterloo.

Connor McCaffery had 17 points and Devontae Lane added 15 as West High improved to 5-0 on the season and 3-0 in MVC play.

Waterloo East dropped to 2-5 and 0-3 in MVC play.

West High didn’t waste any time bouncing back from its first loss of the season.

Logan Cook led three players in double figures with 16 points as class 5A third-ranked West High responded from its overtime loss to City High on Tuesday with a 64-26 win over Waterloo East on Friday at West High.

Lauren Zacharias had 12 points and Katie McGrane added 10 as West High improved to 6-1 on the season and 5-0 in Mississippi Valley Conference play.

Emma Koch had eight points and Paige Beckner five for the Women of Troy.

Kerris Roberts had 16 points to lead Waterloo East (2-7, 0-5 MVC).

West High Goes 1-2 on Opening Day of Battle of Waterloo

West High went 1-2 to finish fourth in the Bob Buckley Bracket at the Battle of Waterloo on Friday.

The Trojans opened with a 45-30 win over West Delaware and fell to Class 3A tenth-ranked North Scott 48-21 in the semifinals before dropping the third place match to City High 41-30.

Nelson Brands, Carter Rohweder and Guy Snow all went 3-0 for West High on Friday.

West High Defeats City High in Cross-town Swimming Showdown

West High defeated City High 112-57 in the annual showdown of cross-town swimming rivals on Tuesday at the Coralville Recreation Center.

Four different West High swimmers claimed an individual title and the Trojans won all three relays on the way to the dual win.

Lane Griffis won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:53.24 and added an individual title in the 500 freestyle in 5:00.95 to lead West High.

Oliver Martin won the 50 freestyle, Izaak Hajek won the 100 butterfly and Brennon Keen won the 100 freestyle for the Trojans.

Forrest Frazier won the 100 breastroke in 1:00.06 and the 200 individual medley in 1:58.74 to pace City High while Ric Thomas won the 100 backstroke for the Little Hawks.

West High Swimmers Win Dubuque Hempstead Quadrangular

West High won a Mississippi Valley quadrangular at Dubuque Hempstead on Saturday with 184.5 points while City High was fourth with 87 points.

West High won the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay and got first place finishes from Lane Griffis in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle, Brennon Keen in the 50 freestyle, Izaak Hajek in the 100 butterfly and Ben Berhow in the 100 breastroke.

Eric Thomas won the 100 backstroke to lead City High.

Brands Wins Title at Prestigous Council Bluffs Classic

Nelson Brands already has plenty of impressive performances in his prep career.

The West High junior added to that list on Saturday.

Brands completed a perfect 7-0 performance at the two-day, 40-team Council Bluffs Classic with a 9-7 decision over Cayd Lara of Fort Dodge in the 152 pound title match.

Ranked No. 1 at 152 pounds, Brands won four straight matches by fall and added a pair of tech falls to reach the finals match where he upended fourth-ranked Lara his first loss of the season.

The title by Brands helped West High to a 16th place team finish with 204.5 points.

Apple Valley Minnesota, ranked 41st nationally by InterMat, won the team title for the second straight season finishing with 622 points.

Class 3A third-ranked Fort Dodge finished second with 449 points while Kearney (Nebraska) was third with 397.

West High senior Carter Rohweder went 6-1 with six pins to finish fifth at 160 pounds.

The only loss for Rohweder was a 6-2 quarterfinal loss to Tony Watts of Apple Valley.

West High Rallies for Win at Dubuque Hempstead

Trailing at halftime for the first time this season on Friday West High was in need of a strong finish to remain unbeaten

The Women of Troy got exactly what they needed.

Class 5A fourth-ranked West High allowed just 11 second-half points while overcoming a six-point halftime deficit in a 59-44 win over Dubuque Hempstead in Dubuque.

West High trailed 33-27 at the half but rallied to improve to 5-0 on the season and 4-0 in Mississippi Valley Conference play.

Logan Cook had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds and Maddie Huinker had 16 points to pace West High.

Cook and Huinker had 10 points apiece in the second half as West High outscored Dubuque Hempstead (3-3, 1-3 MVC) 32-11 in the final two quarters.

Emma Koch had eight points and Lauren Zacharias and Cailyn Morgan each had seven for West High.




Megan Groneau led Dubuque Hempstead with 14 points while Morgan Kluesner added 10 for the Mustangs.

West High edged Dubuque Hempstead 40-36 in a Mississippi Valley Conference dual meet on Thursday in Dubuque.

The teams split the 14 matches with West High earning bonus points in all seven of its wins.

Keaton Speicher, Hunter Davis, Jo Dixon, Nelson Brands and Ashton Stumpf all record pins for West High in the win.

West High Wrestlers Win Dick Mellinger Invitational

West High crowned four individual champions on its way to the team title at the Dick Mellinger Invitational on Saturday in Burlington.

Kaleb Williams, Nelson Brands, Carter Rohweder and Guy Snow all won individual titles as West High claimed the team title with 362 points, 15 more than runner-up Ottumwa.

Jackson Brennan, Keaton Speicher, Ashton Stumpf and Landon Green all added runner-up finishes for the Trojans.

Williams improved to 6-1 on the season while winning the 120-pound title on Saturday while Snow notched three straight pins to claim the title at 220 pounds and improve to 5-1 on the season.

Brands and Rohweder both remained unbeaten on the season with impressive performances.

Top-ranked at 152 pounds, Brands won all four of matches by fall on Saturday to move to 7-0 on the season.

Rohweder, ranked No. 7 at 160 pounds, record three first-period pins on Saturday to improve his season mark to 7-0.

Brennan (6-1) was runner-up at 106 pounds, Speicher (5-2) was second at 113, Stumpf (6-1) finished second at 170 pounds and Green (5-2) was runner-up at 182.

Defense Lifts West High Past CR Xavier 44-35

West High had the type of offensive game that teams often have early in the season on Friday night against Cedar Rapids Xavier.

Fortunately for the Women of Troy their defense is already in mid-season form.

West High collected 18 steals and didn’t allow more than 12 points in quarter to overcome some cool shooting for a 44-35 win over Xavier in a Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Division contest in Cedar Rapids.

Seventh-ranked West High shot 37 percent from the floor on Friday and was 1-of-12 from beyond the 3-point arc but limited the Saints to a season-low scoring output while improving to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in MVC play.

Xavier dropped to 2-2 and 1-1 in conference play with the loss.

Logan Cook had a game-high 16 points and Emma Koch and Rachael Saunders each added seven points for West High.

Maddie Huinker led the West High defensive effort with five steals and Cailyn Morgan grabbed four steals in the win.

Kiana Stanek had nine points to lead Xavier.

West High Defeats Waterloo East, Falls to Linn-Mar at MVC Triangular

West High split a pair of Mississippi Valley Conference dual meets on Thursday in a season-opening triangular at Linn-Mar.

The Trojans opened with a 42-34 win over Waterloo East and dropped a 40-26 decision to Linn-Mar.

Top-ranked Nelson Brands earned a pair of wins at 152 points while Jackson Brennan (106), Carter Rohweder (160) and Ashton Stumpf (170) all won two matches on Thursday.

Cook leads West High past Cedar Rapids Jefferson

Logan Cook proved she was poised for a breakthrough junior season with 22 points in West High’s season opening win last weekend.

Cook backed that performance up with an impressive encore on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-1 Cook scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Class 5A eighth-ranked West High to a 66-46 win over Cedar Rapids Jefferson (0-3) in a Mississippi Valley Conference divisional meeting at West High.

Cook led a trio of West High players in double figures as senior Maddie Huinker had 18 points and Rachael Saunders added 13 as the Women of Troy improved to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in MVC play.

West High held the J-Hawks to three points in the second quarter while turning an eight-point lead into a 33-17 halftime advantage.

The Women of Troy shot 41 percent from the floor in the game and were 9-of-10 from the free throw line.

Cook led the way going 10-of-20 from the field on her way to a career-high 23 points.

Huinker was 4-of-5 from beyond the 3-point arc on her way to 18 points while Saunders added seven rebounds four assists and three steals.

Sophomore Lauren Zacharias had four assists and three steals and Emma Koch and Cailyn Morgan each had three assists as West High finished with 15 as a team.

Kennedy Dighton led Jefferson with 14 points while Kaylee Donner and Kylie Wise each added 11.

Cook, Zacharias Lead West High Past Assumption

West High got the start it wanted to the season on Saturday.

Logan Cook poured in 22 points and Lauren Zacharias added 21 points as West High (1-1) defeated Davenport Assumption 64-47 in a non-conference meeting at West High.

Cook and Zacharias combined to make 17 free throws on Saturday as West High scored 30 of its 64 points from the charity stripe.

West High shot 40 percent from the field and was just 2-of-12 from 3-point range but converted on 30 of 40 free throw attempts.

Rachael Saunders added eight points and Emma Koch had seven points and nine rebounds for West High.

Zacharias added six rebounds, three assists and three steals to go with her 21 points while Paige Beckner grabbed six rebounds.

Katie McGrane had three steals for West High.

Jasmine Harris led Davenport Assumption (1-1) with 11 points while Grace Jacobsen added nine points for the Knights.

Ali, Greiner Pace West High at MVC Divisional Meet

Ali Ali finished third and Kolby Greiner placed fourth to lead West High to a runner-up tea, finish at the Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Divisional meet on Thursday at Gates Park Golf Course in Waterloo.

Class 4A No. 12 Linn-Mar won the team title with 28 points behind the performance of Dalton Gosch and Ryan Murphy who finished first and second respectively.

4A No. 8 West was second with 52 points while Dubuque Wahlert was third with 74 and Cedar Rapids Xavier was fourth with 88 points.

Ali finished third in 16:02 and Greiner was fourth, three seconds behind Ali.

Andrew Murley added a sixth place finish for West High in 16:29 while Ethan Goers was 19th in 17:05.

West High had four runners finish in the top eight on its way to winning the team title at the Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Divisional Meet on Thursday at Gates Park Golf Course in Waterloo.

Class 4A sixth-ranked West High finished nine points in front of No. 14 Linn-Mar for the team title with 32 points.

3A No. 2 Dubuque Wahlert was third with 57 points while Cedar Rapids Xavier was fourth with 111 points.

West High senior Gabby Skopec won the individual title in a time of 18:23, seven seconds in front of teammate Bailey Nock who finished second.

Claire Ronnebaum placed sixth in 19:34 and Olivia Moore was eighth in 19:54 for West High.

West High fell to Dubuque Wahlert 111-75 on Thursday in a Mississippi Valley Conference dual at the Coralville Recreation Center.

Junior Melanie Housenga won the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:15.08 and freshman Lily Ernst won the 100 butterfly in 1:02.02 West High.

Housenga added a runner-up finish the 500 freestyle and Ernst finished second in the 200 individual medley.

Spence Earns Medalist Honors Monday to Secure All-Conference Spot

In sports like basketball and football home court and home field advantage can be a big deal.

West High sophomore Kyle Spence proved on Monday playing at home in golf has its advantages as well.

Spence took advantage of home course advantage to win the individual title at the second Mississippi Valley Conference divisional meet on Monday at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City.

Spence shot a six-over 78 on Monday to edge runner-up Brad Karpick of Cedar Rapids Xavier by one stroke.

The 78 by Spence on Monday helped the sophomore finish fifth in the overall conference standings to earn first team all-MVC honors.

Overall standings are made up of the three-round total from the MVC Supermeet and two divisional meets.

Karpick won the overall division title with a score of 235 while Linn-Mar juniors Drew Brandel and Ben Greif finished second and third with a 236 and 238 respectively.

Cedar Rapids Jefferson senior Nile Happel finished fourth in the overall standings with a 240, one stroke in front of Spence.

West High had two players finish in the top 15 of the overall standings as senior Kyle Jenkins finished 13th with a three-round total of 255.

Jenkins shot an 81 on Monday at Finkbine to help him earn second team all-conference honors.

Linn-Mar won the team title on Monday with a 331 to wrap up the Valley Division title with a 956.

Xavier finished second with a three-round total of 978 while Dubuque Wahlert was third with a 1,016.

West High shot a 341 on Monday, their best score of the three-round series, to finish fourth with an overall score of 1,036.

Karpick earned Valley Division player of the year honors while Cedar Rapids Jefferson coach Steve Koepke was named coach of the year.
