West High Drops Dual to Dubuque Wahlert

West High fell to Dubuque Wahlert 111-75 on Thursday in a Mississippi Valley Conference dual at the Coralville Recreation Center.

Junior Melanie Housenga won the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:15.08 and freshman Lily Ernst won the 100 butterfly in 1:02.02 West High.

Housenga added a runner-up finish the 500 freestyle and Ernst finished second in the 200 individual medley.

Spence Earns Medalist Honors Monday to Secure All-Conference Spot

In sports like basketball and football home court and home field advantage can be a big deal.

West High sophomore Kyle Spence proved on Monday playing at home in golf has its advantages as well.

Spence took advantage of home course advantage to win the individual title at the second Mississippi Valley Conference divisional meet on Monday at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City.

Spence shot a six-over 78 on Monday to edge runner-up Brad Karpick of Cedar Rapids Xavier by one stroke.

The 78 by Spence on Monday helped the sophomore finish fifth in the overall conference standings to earn first team all-MVC honors.

Overall standings are made up of the three-round total from the MVC Supermeet and two divisional meets.

Karpick won the overall division title with a score of 235 while Linn-Mar juniors Drew Brandel and Ben Greif finished second and third with a 236 and 238 respectively.

Cedar Rapids Jefferson senior Nile Happel finished fourth in the overall standings with a 240, one stroke in front of Spence.

West High had two players finish in the top 15 of the overall standings as senior Kyle Jenkins finished 13th with a three-round total of 255.

Jenkins shot an 81 on Monday at Finkbine to help him earn second team all-conference honors.

Linn-Mar won the team title on Monday with a 331 to wrap up the Valley Division title with a 956.

Xavier finished second with a three-round total of 978 while Dubuque Wahlert was third with a 1,016.

West High shot a 341 on Monday, their best score of the three-round series, to finish fourth with an overall score of 1,036.

Karpick earned Valley Division player of the year honors while Cedar Rapids Jefferson coach Steve Koepke was named coach of the year.

The West High boys cross country team placed 15th at the prestigious Rim Rock Farm Classic in Lawrence, Kansas on Saturday.

West High finished with 454 points on its way to an upper half finish in the talented 42-team field in the high school gold division.

The Woodlands College Park won the team title with 96 points followed by St. Thomas Aquinas with 124 points, Blue Springs with 203 and Omaha Creighton Prep with 224.

Kolby Greiner led West High, finishing 16th in a time of 16:24.6 while teammate Ali Ali was 28th in 16:40.2.

Victor Mugeche of Blue Springs won the individual title in 15:37.7.

West High fell to Cedar Rapids Kennedy 109-77 in a Mississippi Valley Conference dual on Tuesday in Cedar Rapids.

Alleyna Thomas won the 200 freestyle for West High while Melanie Housenga added an individual title in the 200 individual medley.

Housenga and Thomas were both part of West High’s winning 200 freestyle relay team.

Jenkins leads West High at Divisional Meet

West High shot a 348 on Monday to place fourth at the Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Divisional meet at St. Andrews Golf Course in Cedar Rapids.

Senior Kyle Jenkins fired an 81 on Monday to lead West High which improved its score from the MVC supermeet in August by one stroke.

Linn-Mar won the team title on Monday with a 318 to increase its lead in the overall Mississippi Division race.

Monday’s meet was the first divisional meet of the season and is the second of three meets used by the conference to determine divisional champions and all-conference honors.

The MVC supermeet in August was the first event used and the second Mississippi Divisional meet will be held Sept. 26 at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City.

Sophomores Kyle Spence and Ryan Cooper each shot an 86 on Monday as West High finished 13 strokes behind third place Dubuque Wahlert.

Linn-Mar edged host Cedar Rapids Xavier by two strokes on Monday and now holds an eight-stroke lead over the Saints entering the final divisional meet.

West High is in fourth place after two events.
